Following a stampede at Mumbai's Bandra terminal that injured at least nine people, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw faced sharp criticism from the Opposition. The Shiv Sena, led by Uddhav Thackeray, accused the minister of being too focused on the bullet train project while ignoring the needs of passengers in Mumbai. Senior leader Aaditya Thackeray raised concerns about the minister's competence regarding railway safety.

The stampede occurred as passengers rushed to board a Gorakhpur-bound train on Sunday morning, with two individuals reported in critical condition. Thackeray expressed, "If only the reel minister could be a rail minister for a change. The Bandra incident reveals the ineptitude of the current Railways Minister. The BJP has appointed Ashwini Vaishnaw to oversee the Maharashtra elections, yet there are weekly incidents and accidents involving the railways. It’s shameful that our country is governed by such incapable ministers."

Sanjay Raut added that the railway minister is "too engrossed in the bullet train project." He remarked, "Mumbai provides the highest revenue to the Union government, but we receive minimal facilities for passengers. The railway minister is disconnected from people's problems, leading to tragedies due to inadequate infrastructure."

The NCP, led by Sharad Pawar, also criticized Vaishnaw, with party leader Clyde Crasto stating, "The Bandra Terminus stampede is very concerning... It demonstrates the failures of the Railways Ministry. The absence of enough trains during the festive season, coupled with local administrative failures, led to this incident." Opposition leaders have referred to the minister as a "reel minister" to highlight the ongoing issues with train accidents and derailments.

In response to the criticism, Vaishnaw defended his record in the Lok Sabha this August, asserting, "We are not just individuals who create reels; we are dedicated workers." With the Maharashtra state elections approaching, the BJP has appointed Vaishnaw, a former bureaucrat, to lead its campaign efforts.
